(Kansas City, Mo.) – The UMKC men's soccer team understandably started the match slow on Friday night against Memphis as bus issues forced the game to start 28 minutes late. The Tigers got a goal with 30 minutes to play and held on for a 1-0 win over the 'Roos.
Memphis (2-1) controlled play in the first half over Kansas City (0-1-1), taking a 10-1 shot advantage into the break. Despite the shot margin, the two squads went into halftime tied at 0-0.
The 'Roos settled down a bit in the second period, and had a chance to take the lead in the 52nd minute on a shot by senior midfielder Guerrero Pino, but the attempt from 15 out sailed just wide.
Memphis answered though, getting a goal off a short corner kick in the 61st minute by Jordan Klipsch. UMKC tried to answer, putting on the pressure, but attempts by Tato Chiaparro and Jordan Rideout were off the mark and saved, respectively.
The Tigers had a few counter attacks after the 'Roos pushed forward, but junior goalkeeper Chris McGaughey made a big save on a breakaway to keep UMKC alive. Memphis' defense held strong though, and kept Kansas City at bay until the final whistle.
The final shot count ended with a 15-7 advantage for the Tigers. McGaughey ended the night with four saves, while UM was forced to make one save. The win by Memphis tied the overall series at 2-2 with UMKC, and snapped a two-game win streak by the 'Roos.
The 'Roos will continue their road swing on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Central Arkansas in Conway. The UMKC women will play the Bears immediately after in a rare road doubleheader.
