(Kansas City, Mo.) - UMKC didn't get any breaks on Saturday night in the WAC opener, and Houston Baptist took advantage of theirs, handing the 'Roos a 2-1 loss in men's soccer action.
Kansas City (1-5-3, 0-1 WAC) controlled the first half of the game generating the majority of the opportunities. The 'Roos got a great chance after junior forward Jordan Rideout flicked on a header off a cross towards the far post, but Houston Baptist (6-2, 1-0 WAC) goalkeeper Kevin Suarez got a hand on it to parry it away. The 'Roos took the round outside the box though, and sophomore Derek Schrick crossed a ball back to the far post, where Rideout was all alone for a header finish from close range in the 28th minute.
The goal was his third in the last four games, and the 17th of his career, tying him for sixth all-time at UMKC.
UMKC took that 1-0 lead into the break, and all looked well with an 8-4 shot advantage, but the second half started as roughly as it could for the 'Roos. HBU's best chance came on a free kick from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar.
Just 30 seconds into the half, HBU put a through ball into the box, with UMKC defender Guerrero Pino running with forward Kristopher Tyrpak. Pino put his body into Tyrpak, while the forward stepped on the ball and fell in the box. The referee felt it was a foul, and not only called a penalty kick, but gave Pino a red card, putting Kansas City down to 10 men. The Huskies finished it to tie the game at one.
Playing a man up for the rest of the half, HBU had the majority of the chances, taking 14 shots to UMKC's six. The Huskies took the game-winner in the 67th minute when Thilo Borgmann hit a shot from the right side of the 18 that curved into the left far post.
The 'Roos didn't fade though, and fought for the equalizer. Junior defender Michael Oakley nearly had it in the 72nd minute when he grabbed a loose ball in the box and fired a shot, but an HBU defender was there on the goal line to deflect it away.
Kansas City also looked to have the game tied in the 84th minute when Schrick played a through ball up the middle, looking for a running Alioune Gueye. An HBU defender got a foot on it, but it went up and over his own goalkeeper and into the net for an own goal, or so everyone thought. The assistant referee had his flag up on the play, and after a discussion with the referee, decided that it was offsides.
The game saw eight cards given, including one to each coach. The 'Roos had five of those cards, with four yellow and one red.
The 'Roos were led by Rideout with five shots, while goalkeeper Chris McGaughey had four saves. Both teams had six shots on frame, while HBU had a 18-14 shot edge.
UMKC will look to re-group with a game at Air Force on Friday in Colorado and another against Grand Canyon on Sunday in Arizona.
