(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC men's soccer settled for a 1-1 tie with the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday, controlling possession most of the night in the regular season opener for both teams.
The 'Roos (0-0-1) got on the board first in the 18th minute when senior Jeffrey Stezovsky played a long cross into the Wisconsin (0-0-1) box, finding sophomore midfielder Derek Schrick. His header from 12 yards out found the back of the net, marking his first career goal for UMKC.

The Badgers nearly got it back in the 20th minute, but UMKC senior goalkeeper Kevin Corby made a one-handed save on a header by Jacob Brindle to keep the shutout.
The next big chance came from the 'Roos as junior forward Jordan Rideout hit a shot off a loose ball from 14 yards out that was saved by UW keeper Casey Beyers.
UMKC looked like it would take the lead into the half, but Wisconsin played a long ball into the box off a free kick as the clock was running down and got on the end of it, creating a scramble inside the six. Tony Ramadani found the rebound and finished it with only six seconds remaining in the half to make it 1-1 at the break.
The second half opened with two chances for the 'Roos, starting with a long distance shot from Schrick that just missed the far post in the 46th minute. Tom McCarthy got a chance a couple minutes later, but his shot from inside the box was saved by Beyers.
Junior defender Michael Oakley nearly gave the 'Roos another lead in the 74th minute off a header on a corner kick, but Beyers again came up big, and was able to parry it away for another corner.
The best chance for the Badgers came in the 80th minute when Corby was unable to handle a cross, and the ball dropped to a Wisconsin player. He took a shot, but a UMKC defender cleared it off the goal line to keep the score knotted, and they headed to overtime.
The 'Roos had the only shot of the first OT, but the second showed a few more opportunities as Rideout was able to get his head on a couple crosses from Schrick, unfortunately for UMKC, both were wide.
The final shot count was 15-15, with five on goal for the 'Roos and four for the Badgers. Rideout finished with seven shots for UMKC while UW was paced by Nick Jones with three. Corby made two saves, while Beyer had four.
Kansas City will be back in action on the road this Friday when it takes on the Memphis Tigers. UMKC plays its next four games on the road.
