The contest got off to a fast start in the first when Kansas City infielder Liz Broyles (1) homered to left-center to give the Kangaroos an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, the Spartans answered when outfielder Shellie Robinson (1) sent a two-run homer to left-center off pitcher Cinda Ramos (0-1) to make it a 2-1 ball game.
In the third, after a double by infielder Cheyenne Griffin, the Spartans added to their lead when infielder Maddison Kieffer doubled to left-center to bring in Griffin. USC-Upstate added to their lead later in the inning when Kieffer scored from third after a Kansas City error during a stolen base situation.
Next inning, with the score now 5-1 and the bases loaded for USC-Upstate, infielder Dana Landers singled to left off new pitcher Deanna Friese (1-0) as two runners came around to score.
In the seventh, same score, the Kangaroos gave it one last push when they put two on with one out after back-to-back singles by designated player Katie Kelley and catcher Alexandra Friloux. But, the Spartans ended the Kangaroos rally hopes after pinch runner Katie Petersen was tagged out at third and infielder Jenna Rangel grounded out to second to end the game.
Offensively, Kansas City managed four hits, with half coming from Broyles in her 2-for-2 performance at the plate. In the circle, pitcher Hannah Alexander (1-0) recorded 10 strikeouts and surrendered one walk in her first start of the season for the Spartans.
Coming up, the Blue & Gold will conclude the Upstate Classic tomorrow at 9 a.m. against the Maine Black Bears (1-1).
