The Tommies took all three games from KC
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Softball (9-17, 0-3 Summit) dropped all three of its Summit League opening series to St. Thomas (21-7, 3-0 Summit) this weekend. The Tommies took game one 8-2 on Friday, game two 4-1 yesterday and game three 15-4 in five innings this afternoon.
In game one, Kansas City battled with the Tommies through a scoreless first three innings. The Roos got out of a jam when Maya Anthony wound up with an over-the-shoulder snag to close the inning. The 0-0 tie was broken in the fourth when the Tommies plated six runs on four hits, including a pair of home runs to deep center and left field.
Down multiple runs, the Roos didn't give up, however, getting two back in the bottom frame of the inning. Following a Elleana Navarro walk, Megan Johnston moved the line with a base knock and Antohny got the Roos on the board with an RBI single. Johnston went on to score from third thanks to a fielder's choice as Kansas City cut the deficit to 6-2. In the sixth and seventh, the Tommies tacked on a pair of runs, 8-2, to put the game out of reach for the Roos.
Game two once again saw no score through the first couple of innings. The second frame was spotlighted by an excellent throw-out by Monica Franklin, who caught a Tommie runner stealing thanks to a brilliant tag by Johnston at the second base bag. St. Thomas broke the tie in the third, putting four runs on the board thanks to a four hit inning.
Delilah Robles struck out a pair while yielding five hits and three earned runs across 2.1 innings pitched. Kansas City's bats woke up in the fifth as Mary Cunningham slapped an RBI double down the left field that scored Mia Corres from first, putting the Roos on the board. For the rest of the game, KC was unable to muster any more of a rally and ended up falling 4-1 in game two against the Tommies.
The final game of the series saw the Tommies jump out to a large lead in the early stages and never look back. UST led 7-0 before the Roos got onto the board in the bottom of the third via a Gianna Lickel double that brought Mia Corres around to score. St. Thomas continued adding to its lead in the fifth inning and Kansas City drew one back on a Johnston home run, but it was not enough to avoid the run rule decision.
Kansas City continues league play next weekend at Omaha.
