In the first, Texas Tech got off to a fast start when infielder Adriana Perez (1) hit a three-run homer off pitcher Katie Kelley (1-1), followed by a solo shot by outfielder Katelyn Williams (1) to make it a 4-0 ball game.
But, Kansas City would gain momentum in the second, beginning with a solo home run to left-center by designated player Emily Ott (1). With this home run, Ott passed Amanda Rice to become the program's all-time in the RBI department with 98.
Next up, Kelley singled to center as Katie Petersen would come in to pinch run. After infielder Chelsea Hartwig was thrown out at first on a bunt attempt as Petersen moved to second, followed by outfielder Kelsey Dean striking out, catcher Caitlin Christopher singled up the middle. After Petersen rounded third during the sequence, she was thrown out at home to end the inning for Kansas City.
Later in the second, Texas Tech added to its lead when designated player Sandy James drove in three runs with a double to right-center to make the score 8-1. Next batter, Perez (2) connected for her second home run (2) of the morning to increase the Red Raiders' lead to eight.
In the fourth, with the score now 11-1, Kansas City cut the deficit to eight when infielder Marlee Maples scored off an error, while pitcher Cinda Ramos drove in outfielder Bri Wyatt after she was thrown out at first.
However, the Kangaroos did not score the rest of the game as Texas Tech came away with the victory in five innings.
Later today at 7 p.m., Kansas City will look to get back on track as it will take on the Colorado State Rams.
