(Air Force Academy, Colo.) - The Kansas City men's soccer squad came back from two goals down to tie Air Force 2-2 on the road in WAC play Friday night, thanks to a goal and an assist from junior forward Tato Chiaparro in the second half.
The Falcons (0-8-1, 0-0-1 WAC) withstood an early attack by the 'Roos (1-5-4, 0-1-1 WAC), who controlled the opening 20 minutes, but Air Force took the momentum with a goal in the 27th minute by Ryan Ward from 18 yards out off a corner kick.
Just three minutes later Ward struck again when he finished a through ball from 10 yards out to give AFA a 2-0 lead. The Falcons held that lead at the half, while both teams faced seven shots. Air Force doubled its goal total for the season.
The second stanza was a different story though as Kansas City took a majority of the chances. Chiaparro got on the board for UMKC in the 53rd minute, hitting a shot over the goalkeeper from 35 yards out after the defense had cleared it. It was his third goal of the season.
UMKC pounded the Air Force goal the rest of the half, but didn't get it tied until the 85th minute when sophomore Roberto Albuquerque finished a ball in the box off a corner from Chiaparro. It was his first career goal for the 'Roos, and it also marked the first time the Kansas City had scored multiple goals in a game this season.
The game went to overtime from there. Chiaparro had a chance to score in the 97th minute, but Air Force goalkeeper Jake Schenk. The second overtime saw the 'Roos take a 3-1 shot advantage, but none could find the netting as the 'Roos tied their fourth game of the season. The four ties match the 2007 UMKC record for a season.
The 'Roos had a 19-14 advantage in shots and put eight of those on goal compared to six for the Falcons. Chiaparro led UMKC with four shots, while goalkeeper Chris McGaughey made four saves.
UMKC will continue the road swing on Sunday when it faced Grand Canyon in another WAC contest at 4:30 p.m. CT in Phoenix, Ariz.
