(Las Vegas, Nev.) - The UMKC men's soccer squad had its three-game win streak snapped when it dropped a physical 2-0 contest to UNLV on Friday on the road in WAC play. The Rebels tallied two second half goals to take the win in the first ever meeting between the squads.
The 'Roos (4-6-4, 3-2-1 WAC) came out strong in the contest, forcing UNLV (5-9, 3-3 WAC) goalkeeper Ryan Harding to make a pair of saves in the first 20 minutes, including a save by a defender on a Jordan Rideout shot in the 19th minute, but UNLV started to gain traction at the 24 minute mark with a couple shots. UMKC goalkeeper Chris McGaughey was up to the task though making saves on both.
The two teams went into the half tied 0-0, with the Rebels holding a narrow 8-6 shot advantage.
The second period saw the game get chippy with eight cards handed out by the referee, seven of which were given to UMKC. The offense also got going as the half saw 12 shots on frame between the teams.
The Rebels nearly got on the board first when they got a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after a foul and yellow card by freshman Clay Stewart, but McGaughey came up with the big save. UMKC almost got the momentum back when senior Guerrero Pino hit a shot off the crossbar in the 66th minute.
UNLV got on the board first though, as Kyle Mellies knocked in a cross in the goal mouth off a free kick in the 70th minute. The 'Roos tried to answer with chances from Pino and Rideout in the minutes following, but none could find the back of the net.
The next big play came in the 85th minute when sophomore Broc Cramer received a second yellow card, resulting in a red card ejection. The 'Roos were handed two other cards on the play, including one on the bench. UNLV then converted the ensuing free kick as it played a ball into the box that found the foot of Salvador Bernal for the finish and game clincher.
McGaughey finished the contest with 10 saves, while UNLV's Harding had six, as well as a team save. The Rebels tallied a 21-13 shot advantage as well.
Kansas City will continue the road swing on Sunday when it faces Bakersfield in California at 4:30 p.m. Central time.
