(Bakersfield, Calif.) - The preseason men's soccer WAC favorite, Bakersfield, tallied goals at the end of each half to take a 2-0 win against Kansas City on Sunday afternoon on the west coast.
Bakersfield (6-7-2, 4-2-1 WAC) had the first four shots of the game, but Kansas City (4-7-4, 3-3-1 WAC) nearly took a 1-0 lead when senior Alioune Gueye clanked one off the post in the 13th minute. It was one of only two shots for UMKC in the opening period as the Roadrunners controlled the action on offense with 14 shots, three of which were on goal.
The 'Roos nearly took the contest into the half tied at 0-0, but with only 29 seconds remaining on the clock, the 'Runners tallied a goal on some quick one-touch passes as Hugo Vinales tapped it in from inside the six yard box.
Kansas City could only generate four shots in the second half, one of which was on goal in the 73rd minute from sophomore Derek Schrick, but the CSUB goalkeeper was up to the task. UMKC goalkeeper Chris McGaughey was tested often in the period, making seven saves.
The 'Roos couldn't find the back of the net though, and the 'Runners got the game-clincher in the 88th minute when Jonathan Colunga knocked in a rebound off a save from McGaughey, making it 2-0.
For the outing, McGaughey had 10 saves while CSUB out-shot the 'Roos 24-6.
The 'Roos will be back at home on Friday night against San Jose State, before facing Seattle on Senior Day Sunday.
