
?Roos Allow No Runs to Take Saturday?s Doubleheader Over Oakland, 7-0 and 1-0

(Kansas City, Mo.) - In Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against the Oakland Grizzlies (8-37, 5-18 SL), the UMKC softball team (21-27, 9-11 SL) took both games, 7-0 and 1-0.
In game one in the fifth with outfielder Megan Vicino at second and one out, no score, Kangaroo infielder Kaelene Curry sent one to short and beat the throw at first as Vicino moved to third. Next up, infielder Kelly Fischer sent one to short, but a throwing error by Oakland to third resulted in Vicino scoring the first run of the game.
Later in the inning after catcher Caitlin Christopher popped out to third, designated player Chelsea Hartwig drove in two runs when she singled to left to make it a 3-0 ball game.
In the sixth after two leadoff singles by outfielder Anna Sokolik and Vicino, Oakland pitcher Abbie Richardson (3-11) walked infielder Danielle Bennefeld to the load the bases, followed by Curry getting hit by a pitch to bring in Sokolik.
Two batters later with the bases still loaded after Fischer reached first on a fielder's choice, same score, Christopher increased the Kangaroo lead to six when she doubled to left as two runners scored. The Grizzlies then replace Richardson with Katie Moy (0-2), but UMKC made it a 7-0 ball game when Fischer scored from third after a wild pitch to Hartwig.
In the seventh, Oakland was retired in order as pitcher Deanna Friese (10-14) allowed two hits, while walking one and striking out five for her third shutout and 19th completed game of the season.
At the plate, UMKC tallied nine hits led by Vicino's 3-for-3 performance along with a run scored. Also, Hartwig went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Christopher went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
In game two, no score, the game headed into extra innings with pitcher's Cinda Ramos (10-12) and Brittany Doyle (5-16) allowing a combined eight hits as Ramos surrendered three compared to Doyle's five.
After keeping the game scoreless in the top half of the eighth, the Kangaroos led off the inning with back-to-back singles for Curry's second and Fischer's third hits of the game. Next up, Christopher recorded her second single of game two when she hit one to left to bring in Curry for the game-winning run.
As for Ramos, she allowed four hits and walked one, while striking out three for her 12th completed game and second shutout of the season.
Coming up, the two squads will conclude its series tomorrow at 12 p.m. as UMKC will honor its seven seniors (Curry, Fischer, Vicino, Sokolik, Bennefeld, Megan Ussary, and Ashley Whiteside) for Senior Day.
