Nelson Takes Home Weight Throw Title At UCM Classic

(Kansas City, Mo.) -- UMKC junior Ramon Nelson took home the Weight throw title at the UCM Classic in Warrensburg, Mo., on Friday afternoon with a personal best throw of 58-10.25 (17.94m) to lead the Kangaroos.
Joining Nelson in the top-five in the men's weight throw were sophomore Kris Leverette, who finished second with a distance of 57-04.25 (17.48m), and freshman Cade Lambson, who finished fourth with a personal best distance of 51-07.25 (15.73m). Sophomore Blaine Scott, meanwhile, finished ninth with a personal best toss of 44-05.25 (13.54m).
In the shot put, Nelson finished with a team-high fourth place finish with a distance of 52-01.75 (15.89m), while Lambson finished fifth with a throw of 49-08.25 (15.14m), Leverette finished eighth with a throw of 44-02.00 (13.46m) and Scott finished 11th with a throw of 41-01.00 (12.57m).
Rounding out the men's results at the UCM Classic were senior Brett Guemmer's eighth place finish in the 3000m run, including a personal best of 8:55.61 in the prelims, and Charles Hinton's 13th place finish in the 60m dash.
On the women's side, senior Denise Banda came in second in the weight throw with a personal best throw of 55-06.25 (16.92m) and eighth in the shot put with a distance of 39-09.75 (12.13m), while senior Kimoya Harriott finished fourth in the weight throw with a personal best distance of 53-09.75 (16.40m) and ninth in the shot put with a throw of 38-08.25 (11.79m) and junior Susan Brueggemann finished sixth in the weight throw with a personal best throw of 51-00.75 (15.56m) and sixth in the shot put with a distance of 42-03.75 (12.87m).
In the jump competitions, freshman Lynette Cottingham came in third in the long jump (16-07.75 - 5.07m) and eighth in the triple jump (33-10.25 - 10.32m), sophomore Jasmine Cooper finished fourth in the long jump (16-07.00 - 5.05m) and fourth in the triple jump (35-05.00 - 10.79m) and sophomore Michelle Momo registered a seventh place result in the long jump (16-06.00 - 5.03m) and a ninth place finish in the triple jump (33-08.00 - 10.26m).
In the 3000m run, sophomore Taylor Spencer placed a team-high third with a time of 10:55.28, while sophomore Meg Doss' 11:00.66 was a new personal best and good for a fifth place finish. Stephany Johnson, meanwhile, placed third in the 60m dash with a time of 7.88 and sophomore Angel Gannon came in second in the 800m run with a time of 2:22.04.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Feb. 24-25 when they head to Fort Wayne, Ind., for The Summit League Championships.
