(Macomb, Ill.) - Despite a valiant effort to advance to the final round of The Summit League Championships, the No. 2 seed Kansas City Kangaroos (7-10-2, 5-2 SL) suffered a tough 1-0 overtime loss Friday afternoon to the No. 3 seed and tournament host, Western Illinois Leathernecks (6-8-5, 3-2-2 SL).
Last week, the Leathernecks came away with a 2-1 win over the Kangaroos in their regular season finale at home to earn a spot in the league tournament.
In the first period, the Kangaroos came out strong and owned the shot-count, 10-5, while keeper Connor Sparrow (6-8) picked up two saves to keep the match scoreless at the half.
Coming out of the locker room, Western Illinois out-shot the Kangaroos, 13-8. However, Sparrow and the rest of the Kangaroo defense held the Leathernecks at bay, despite Western Illinois having six corner-kicks in the period.
Offensively, Kansas City had a couple of opportunities to get on the board in the second period, yet it came up empty, as Sparrow's counterpart, Yves Dietrich (6-8-5), picked up two saves.
In the overtime period during the 94th minute, the Leathernecks broke through and scored the game-winning goal when midfielder Drew Edmond sent a pass from the right side near the middle of Kansas City's box, as forward Nathan Bruinsma (6) knocked in a header. Midfielder Maclean Johnson was also credited with an assist.
At game's end, both squads put up 19 shots, as forward David Sarabia finished with a team-high five, while Sparrow recorded nine saves. Also, Friday's match had a combined 22 fouls, including three yellow cards charged to Kansas City and two to the Leathernecks.
Sunday, Western Illinois will take on Oakland for The Summit League Championship and a bid to the NCAA College Cup.
