The 'Roos (5-4-2, 3-0 SL) have now gone unbeaten in their last six matches, and have won four in a row overall. It is the first four-game winning streak for UMKC since 2008. The 'Roos also extended their unbeaten streak against the Golden Eagles (2-9, 1-2 SL) to six games, and have defeated them in Kansas City four times in a row.
The 'Roos got on the board in the 14th minute when junior midfielder Tom McCarthy got behind the defense for a chance, but ORU goalkeeper Ryan Grashik made a big save on the shot. Fortunately for Kansas City, senior David Sarabia knocked in the rebound for his third goal of the year. It was his 17th career goal, moving him into a tie for fifth all-time at UMKC.
Kansas City made it 2-0 in the 40th minute off a nice piece of play between sophomore Sylvester Yiadom and Jordan Rideout. Yiadom played the ball in to Rideout in the middle of the field, and he flicked it past the last defender, putting Yiadom in on a 1-on-1 break with the goalkeeper. He put it over the keeper's head for the goal, his second in the last two games.
UMKC looked as if it would take that 2-0 lead into the break, but ORU got a break in behind the 'Roo defense with 15 seconds to play, and a penalty kick was called on UMKC goalkeeper Connor Sparrow. John James put it in off the right post to convert it.
The 'Roos out-shot the Golden Eagles by a 12-7 margin in the contest, including a couple close misses by both team in the second half. Sparrow was not forced to make any saves on the night, but made some key interceptions of crosses during the contest.
The Kangaroos will step back out of conference for a contest with Drake on Tuesday night at Durwood Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
