
UMKC Looks To Snap Two Game Skid In Final Summit League Meeting With Southern Utah

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC
women's basketball team (14-8, 5-5) will continue its Summit League road
schedule on Monday when it heads to Cedar City, Utah to take on
Southern Utah (5-16, 1-9) in the final contest as league foes. The game
between the 'Roos and the Thunderbirds is slated for a 7 p.m. start at
Centrum Arena.

Opponent Preview
The Thunderbirds enter the contest with a 5-16 record overall and a 1-9 mark in Summit League play, after falling to South Dakota, 68-40 on Saturday night. Freshman Hailey Mandelko leads the Thunderbirds in scoring at 13.1 points per game, while also adding 3.1 rebounds, 36 assists and 20 steals. Sophomore Carli Moreland, meanwhile, is tops on the team in rebounding, collecting 8.9 per game, while adding 11.1 points and a team-leading 29 blocks. As a team, SUU is shooting .366 from the field, .344 from three-point range, and .717 from the line.

Head Coach Candace Whitaker has posted an 8-3 record during her tenure has the UMKC head coach. Last season, the 'Roos won 73-66 on Jan. 8 in Kansas City, before picking up a 71-68 win on Feb. 5 in Cedar City. This season, UMKC won 81-61 on Dec. 29.
First Meeting
The UMKC women's basketball team picked up its first Summit League win of the season with an 81-61 win over Southern Utah on Dec. 29 night at the Swinney Recreation Center.
As a team, five 'Roos reached double figures, led by junior Kim Nezianya and sophomore Ashli Hill's 16 points each. Senior Dayon-Hall Jones, meanwhile, added 15, while senior LeAndrea Thomas and junior Kaycie Boyles chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.
On the glass, Nezianya finished with a team-high 12 boards for her first double-double of the season, while Hill and sophomore Eilise O'Connor each recorded a career-high nine rebounds.
In the game, the Kangaroos shot 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) from the free throw line, while limiting Southern Utah to just 32.2 percent shooting from the field.
Individually, O'Connor reached her career-high with seven assists, while adding six rebounds. On the defensive end, Hill registered seven blocks, while Thomas notched six steals and grabbed six rebounds.

For the 'Roos, Nezianya grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and scored a team-high 14 points, while senior Dayon Hall-Jones matched Nezianya with 14 points, to go along with a career-high six rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore point guard Eilise O'Connor added 10 points, a game-high nine assists and five rebounds, while Ashli Hill scored eight points and collected a career-high 10 caroms. Senior LeAndrea Thomas, meanwhile, was the only other Kangaroo in double figures, finishing with 11 points in the effort.
