
Kangaroos Complete Three-Game Sweep Of NDSU With 8-1 Win

Lawrence, Kan. -- The UMKC softball team (13-6, 3-0) completed its three-game sweep of North Dakota State (7-16, 0-3) with an 8-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan. In the game, the 'Roos swiped seven bases, their second highest total of the season.
Sophomore Deanna Friese (10-4) picked up her second win of the series in a complete game, three-hitter with six strikeouts, while junior Anna Sokolik led the 'Roo offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Bison got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning, but UMKC quickly answered when Sokolik's RBI double knocked in junior Kaelene Curry to tie the game at one.
UMKC then captured the lead in the second after junior Ashley Whiteside's two-out single scored freshman Katie Henning from third.
An inning later, the 'Roos extended their lead to 3-1 when Henning drove in sophomore Emily Ott with an RBI single.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Kangaroos broke the game open with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.
In the fifth, Sokolik led-off the inning with a single before coming around to score on Henning's second consecutive RBI single. Senior Lauren Rodrigues then knocked in Henning with a double to left center.
In the sixth, junior Kelly Fischer got the scoring started with an RBI single, scoring Curry. Sokolik and Ott then followed with a double and a walk, respectively before junior Megan Ussary drove in both with a two-run double.
Friese, meanwhile, retired 11 of the final 12 Bison hitters, including the final five, to close-out the game for the 'Roos.
In the game, Henning finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases, while Curry and Ott each scored two runs and stole a base. Whiteside, meanwhile went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they welcome in Iowa State to Kansas City for a doubleheader at Loyola Park beginning at 3 p.m.
