
'Roos Drop Two On Day One Of The Austin Peay Spring Classic

Clarksville, Tenn. -- The UMKC softball team (4-3) dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Austin Peay Spring Classic. In the opener, UMKC fell to 6-5 to Belmont (2-4) before losing to Austin Peay (2-4) 5-4.
Sophomore Emily Ott led the offensive attack, going 6-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs.
Against Belmont, the 'Roos took an early lead with a five-run second. Danielle Bennefeld started the scoring, crossing the plate on Kaelene Curry's single. Anna Sokolik then knocked in Curry, while Ott's single scored Kelly Fischer. Freshman Katie Henning capped the UMKC scoring with a two-run double, scoring Megan Ussary and Sokolik.
UMKC would hold on to the lead until the sixth when starter Katie Franks gave up five runs, before Deanna Friese allowed the winning run to score.
Against Austin Peay, the 'Roos fell behind 2-0 before Whiteside singled in Bennefeld to get the 'Roos on the board.
Austin Peay answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending its lead to 5-1.
In the seventh, the 'Roos tried to comeback, as Megan Ussary knocked in Curry and Ott tripled in Ussary and Fischer, but could not get Ott home and the Governors held on for the win.
UMKC will close out the tournament tomorrow when they take on Cleveland State at 9 a.m. and Ball State at 11 a.m.
