
UMKC Rebounds With Two Wins On Day Two Of Austin Peay Spring Classic

Clarksville, Tenn. -- The UMKC softball team (6-3) rebounded on the second day of the Austin Peay Spring Classic, closing out the tournament with a pair of wins on the final day. In the opening game, the 'Roos knocked off Cleveland State, 7-6, before dismissing Ball State, 3-2.
Senior Lauren Rodrigues belted two home runs on the day, while sophomore Emily Ott went 4-for-7 with a pair of doubles to cap off her big weekend. Junior Kaelene Curry, meanwhile, also went 4-for-7 on the final day of tournament play.
In the opening game against Cleveland State, the 'Roos jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the top of the first. Megan Ussary's RBI single knocked in Curry to get the scoring started, before Kelly Fischer came around to score on Ott's RBI double. Ott later scored on a wild pitch, before Rodrigues' two-run blast with Katie Henning on board put the 'Roos ahead 5-0.
The Vikings cut the lead to three with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but UMKC answered with a single run in the second on Ussary's sac fly that scored Curry.
Cleveland State added a run in the second, but UMKC reliever Deanna Friese retired the 11 of the next 12 Viking hitters, including nine straight.
UMKC then extended its lead in the top of the six on Curry's RBI single that scored Rodrigues, but a solo home run by CSU trimmed the lead to 7-4 heading into the seventh.
In the inning, Friese struck out the lead-off hitter before allowing a single. After getting the next batter to pop out to second an RBI double and single cut the lead to one. Sokolik, though, got the final batter to pop out to third to end the game.
In the game, Friese tossed the final six innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.
Against Ball State, UMKC again took control early, getting single runs in each of the first three innings.
In the first, Curry led-off with a single and stole home for the game's first run, while Rodrigues followed with a solo home run in the second. The 'Roos' final run came in the third when Ussary knocked in Curry with an RBI single.
The Cardinals cut into the UMKC lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh, but UMKC Friese retired the final two hitters for her fifth win of the season.
On the weekend, Ott went 10-for 14, while junior Ashley Whiteside went 7-for-12.
UMKC will be back in action again next weekend at for five games at the Radisson-UCF Invitational.
