
UMKC Extends Win Streak To Seven Against Southern Utah

Cedar City, Utah -- The UMKC softball team (16-23, 7-7) extended is longest win streak since winning 10 in a row in 2002 to seven games with a pair of wins over Summit League foe Southern Utah (8-33, 4-14). In game one, the 'Roos downed the Thunderbirds in a come-from-behind 5-4 win before picking up an 8-1 victory in game two.
In the first game of the day, Southern Utah got the scoring started early with two first inning runs off UMKC starter Deanna Friese.
The lead was short lived though, as the 'Roos immediately answered with three runs in the top of the second to take their first lead in the contest. Lauren Rodrigues started the scoring when her RBI single knocked in Chelsea Hartwig and Danielle Bennefeld, before the UMKC catcher came around to score on an SUU error to give UMKC a 3-2 lead.
After each team went scoreless in their next at-bat, Southern Utah tied the contest with a single run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly.
UMKC would recapture the lead in the fourth when Emily Ott's RBI single scored Kaelene Curry from third, before Megan Vicino's RBI double in the fifth knocked in Taylor Hill to push the lead to 5-3.
Southern Utah then cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, but it would not be enough as the 'Roos would hold on for the 5-4 win.
In the game, Friese (8-11) picked up the win, tossing a complete game, allowing four runs while striking out 12 Thunderbird batters. At the plate, Taylor Hill led the UMKC offensive attack, as the freshman recorded the most hits in a single game this season for the squad, finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles.
In game two, the 'Roos jumped out to the early lead, putting single runs on the board in each of the first two innings. Anna Sokolik knocked in the first UMKC run when her single scored Curry, while Hill would score on Bennefeld's sacrifice fly in the second to give her squad a 2-0 lead.
Southern Utah got on the scoreboard with an RBI single off UMKC starter Sokolik in the third, cutting the 'Roos lead to 2-1, heading into the fifth.
In the fifth, the UMKC tacked on a pair of runs to push the lead to three, when Kelly Fischer and Rashonda Stanley scored on a Thunderbird error with Taylor Hill at the plate.
UMKC would add another run in the sixth when Bennefled drilled her first home run of the season off Bubba Kearns.
The 'Roos then put the game away in the seventh with three runs, pushing the lead to the final 8-1 margin. In the inning, Carli Slagle drove in Ott to get the scoring started, before coming around to score on a wild pitch. The team would get its final run of the game when Curry's RBI single scored Bennefeld.
Sokolik (8-6) notched the win on the mound for the 'Roos, allowing one run in a complete game effort, while Bennefeld finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The two teams will wrap-up the series tomorrow when the square-off in the season finale at 1 p.m.
