Cedar City, Utah -- The UMKC softball team (16-24, 7-8) dropped the series finale with Southern Utah (9-33, 5-14) on Saturday, 12-10, despite nine hits, eight RBIs and five runs from Kaelene Curry, Kelly Fischer, Anna Sokolik and Emily Ott, the top four hitters in the line-up.
In the first, UMKC took a 2-0 lead on Sokolik's two-run home run to right center that scored Fischer.
SUU countered with a single run in the bottom of the first, before the 'Roos took a 5-1 lead in the second on Curry's three-run double that knocked in Lauren Rodrigues, Rhiannon Mendez and Taylor Hill.
The two teams would go scoreless in their next at-bat, before the Thunderbirds grabbed their first lead of the game with a five-run third to take a 6-5 lead.
UMKC, however, would quickly retake the lead with a five-run inning of its own. Kelly Fischer got the scoring started with an RBI single that scored Chelsea Hartwig before Ott's RBI single knocked in Curry and Rodrigues. Taylor Hill then capped off the inning with a two-run single, scoring Fischer and Ott, giving the 'Roos a 10-6 lead.
Southern Utah again responded, cutting the lead to one with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, before tying the game in the bottom of the fifth with a single run off Sokolik.
The Thunderbirds then took the final lead of 12-10 on Darleen Fernandez's two-run home run.
In the game, all nine UMKC starters notched a hit and seven of the nine scored at least one run.
The Blue and Gold will be back in action again on Wednesday, when they head to Las Vegas to take on UNLV.
