Rochester, Mich. -- The UMKC men's basketball (4-3, 0-2) team dropped its Summit League contest on Saturday, 99-62, to Oakland (5-3, 2-0) at the O'Rena.
Spencer Johnson led the 'Roos in scoring and rebounding for the second consecutive game, finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds, one shy of his career-high. It is the third double-double of the season for Johnson and the 11 of his career. Trinity Hall, meanwhile, matched his career-high in points, scoring 13 for the second straight game, while finishing second on the team with five rebounds.
In the first half, Oakland got out to a fast start, scoring the game's first 10 points, before a Bakari Lewis three-pointer sliced the OU lead to seven.
After a 5-0 run by the Grizzlies, Lewis would knock down another basket leading to an 8-5 UMKC run and cutting the advantage to 20-11 with 12:36 remaining.
The 'Roos would stay within striking distance later in the half when Johnson and Hall would tally layups on back-to-back possessions, before Johnson's three-pointer with 8:40 to play trimmed the lead to 14.
Oakland would then go on a 10-0 run over the next 2:45 to extend its lead to 42-18.
Dustin Dibble's jumper and another Johnson three on consecutive possessions cut the lead to 44-22, but the 'Roos would add only two more field goals the rest off the half and take a 60-27 deficit into the break.
Coming out of the break, the 'Roos would step up the intensity, scoring 11 of the half's first 24 points, but a 10-4 Oakland run would push the lead to 82-42 with 11:46 remaining.
The 'Roos would answer OU's run with an 8-4 run of their own, cutting the lead to 86-50 with 8:14 to play.
UMKC would then go cold from the field over the next 4:12, as the Grizzlies out-scored the 'Roos 7-0 during the stretch.
A Johnson free throw would end the scoring drought and jump start a 12-6 run to close out the game, putting the final margin at 99-62.
In the game, the 'Roos committed 29 fouls, while the Golden Grizzlies finished with 20. Oakland out-shot the 'Roos from the field 57.6 percent to 34.9 percent.
The Blue and Gold will step out of league play for the next five games, starting on Wednesday when they host Utah Valley at 7:05 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center.
