UMKC Down Centenary In Three In Volleyball Action

Shreveport, La. -- The UMKC volleyball team (9-18, 6-9) picked up a Summit League win on Friday night, downing Centenary (3-20, 0-15), 3-0, in Shreveport, La. Leading the way for the 'Roos were the setters, as sophomore Ella Meier led the 'Roos with 18 assists, while Holly Schmidt chipped in 11.
In the first set, the 'Roos downed the Ladies, 25-20 after taking a 12-5 lead early on a kill from Christiana McQuin. Centenary would close to within three late at 23-20, but UMKC would score the final two points of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
UMKC extended its lead to 2-0 with a 25-21 second set win. In the set, the 'Roos fell behind early, trailing late at 19-16. A 9-2 run however, capped by a Kelsey Knoche kill, gave the 'Roos the two set advantage heading into intermission.
The 'Roos would close out the match in the third set with a 25-21 win. The two squads battled throughout the set as the scored was tied halfway through at 16-16. At that point however, the 'Roos were in the midst of a 6-0 run that gave them a 20-16 lead. Centenary would close to within two at 22-20, but three of the final four points went to UMKC and so did the match.
Offensively, McQuin finished with a team-high nine kills, while Knoche added eight. Defensively, Kayla Riggs and Elizabeth Beck finished with 18 and 14 digs, respectively, while McQuin finished with a team-high five blocks.
UMKC will be back in action again on Sunday when it takes on Oral Roberts at 4 p.m.
