Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC volleyball team (9-20, 6-11) dropped a five-set match to Summit League Champion IPFW (20-9, 14-2), 3-2, on Thursday night at the Swinney Recreation Center. Senior Kayla Riggs led the 'Roos in the match, finishing with a career-high and a UMKC team season-high 33 digs, while Kelsey Knoche (12 kills and 16 digs), Elizabeth Beck (10 kills and 16 digs) and Ella Meier (25 assists and 14 digs) all notched double-doubles.
In the match, the 'Roos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a 25-19 first set win. In the set, the 'Roos jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the set tightened up when the Mastodons fought back to tie the set at five. From there, the neither team built more than a three point lead until UMKC used a 5-1 run to close out the set.
UMKC pushed its lead to 2-0 with a 25-22 second set victory. The 'Roos again built a big lead early, gaining a 15-9 advantage through the first 24 points. IPFW would cut the lead to one late however, at 20-19 but a kill by Meier with the 'Roos leading 24-22 gave them the two set lead heading into the break.
IPFW though would not go away, as the 'Dons came out of the break and evened the match up by taking the next two sets. In the third set, IPFW downed the 'Roos 25-19 before taking the fourth set 25-17 to set up a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set, the 'Roos jumped ahead 5-3 before IPFW tied the set up at six. Then, with the score tied at seven points apiece, the 'Dons went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. UMKC would close to within two at 12-10, but 3-1 IPFW run gave the Mastodons the match.
In the match, Holly Schmidt finished with 20 assists, while Christiana McQuin registered a team-high 13 kills and five blocks. Demetria Williams, meanwhile, added seven kills and five blocks for the 'Roos.
UMKC will close-out its 2010 season on Saturday when they host Oakland at the SRC at 7 p.m.
