
'Roos Fall To Oakland In Season Finale

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC volleyball team (9-21, 6-12) lost is season finale on Saturday night, 3-1, to Oakland (17-13, 12-6) at the Swinney Recreation Center after honoring its three senior, Holly Schmidt, Kayla Riggs and Christina McCarthy, on Senior Night. Kelsey Knoche led the squad with 13 kills and 18 digs, while Emily Lucas added a career-high 15 kills.
Schmidt, meanwhile, finished with a team-high 21 assists against the Golden Grizzlies, while Riggs' 27 digs were also tops on the team.
In the match, Oakland jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the first set 25-22, but the 'Roos quickly responded, evening the match with a 25-23 second set win.
In the second set, UMKC jumped out to three point leads of 3-0, 4-1 and 6-3 before OU battled back to even up the set at 9-9. The 'Roos would build their lead back up to three at 12-9, but the Grizzlies would again battle back to tie the set up at 13. The two squads would trade the next seven points before Oakland took its first lead of the set at 20-19. The two teams would again trade points until, with the score tied at 23, back-to-back kills by Schmidt and Knoche gave the 'Roos the set.
Coming out of the break, Oakland would take control of the match with a 25-19 third set win before closing out the match with a 25-21 fourth set victory.
In the match, Ella Meier notched 20 assists and 13 digs, while Elizabeth Beck added nine kills and 12 digs. Erin Wellwood, meanwhile, added 17 digs, helping the 'Roos to 97 total digs, their second most this season.
