Tulsa, Okla. -- The UMKC men's tennis team opened Summit League play with a 4-1 victory over IUPUI on Friday morning at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Kangaroos picked up wins at the top four singles positions to improve their record to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Playing indoors, the two squads didn't partake in the doubles matches to start the day. With three courts at their disposal, the one, three and five positions opened play with the two, four and six lines following once previous matches were completed.
Freshman Gustavo Guerin got things rolling for the 'Roos with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Bren Vasalakis at the three line. The victory was Guerin's seventh win of the season. IUPUI then evened the tally at one when Jorge Yunes defeated Erwin Quintanilla at the five position by the scores of 7-5, 6-2.
UMKC then took control of the match when Patrick Smith cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Daniel Kingenberg at the No. 2 spot. Junior Dennis Schwarz then tallied the squad's third team point with his 6-3, 6-4 decision over Taylor Tunis at the four line.
The most competitive match of the day came at the top singles line where UMKC's Bret Berryman had to rally from a set down to earn the victory. The Blue Springs, Mo., native dropped the opening set to Gregory Sosa, 7-6 (1), before storming back to claim the victory with 6-2, 6-4 scores. It was Berryman's fifth victory of the season, and the "W" also clinched the win for the 'Roos.
