'Roos Remain Unbeaten In League Play With 4-1 Win Over IPFW

Tulsa, Okla. -- The UMKC men's tennis team wrapped up the first Summit League cluster of the season with a 4-1 victory over IPFW on Saturday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. The 'Roos used singles victories at the one, two, three and six position to improve their record to 9-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play.
Playing indoors, the two squads didn't partake in the doubles matches to start the day. With three courts at their disposal, the two, four and six positions opened play with the one, three and five lines following once previous matches were completed.
Junior Patrick Smith picked up UMKC's first victory with his straight set, 6-3, 6-3, win over Felipe Gama at the two position. Freshman Nick Hays followed with his second straight victory, as he defeated the 'Dons' Cameron Braun by the score of 6-4, 6-3 at the six line.
Freshman Gustavo Guerin put the 'Roos up 3-0 courtesy of his straight set win at the three line. The Brazil native cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Luis Maselli.
IPFW got on the board with a tight three-set win at the four position. Rodrigo Tamashiro fought back from being a set down to top UMKC's Dennis Schwarz, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Junior Bret Berryman clinched the team's third straight victory with his straight set victory at the top singles position. The Blue Springs, Mo., native won a tightly contested 7-6 (3) decision in the first set over Hermann Kuschke before closing out the match with a 6-3 win in set two.
UMKC (9-5, 3-0) will have a week off before heading to Fort Wayne, Ind., for the second and final Summit League cluster of the season. The squad will face off against Oral Roberts, South Dakota State and Centenary on April 9-11.
