Memphis, Tenn. -- The UMKC softball team picked up its fifth win of the 2009 season with a 9-4 victory at Memphis on Friday afternoon at the Blues City Classic. The Kangaroos pounded out 17 hits in the game as six players had at least two hits, including three apiece by Kaelene Curry and Ashley Whiteside.
UMKC struck first as it scored three first inning runs off of Tiger pitcher Vanessa Walle. Curry led off the game with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice. Chelsea Hartwig then brought her home with an RBI single up the middle. The 'Roos then took advantage of a Memphis error, as two additional runs crossed the plate. The Tigers, however, got a pair of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, when they scored a pair of runs off of three hits.
After a scoreless second and third, UMKC went to work and scored a pair of runs in the fourth. Whiteside opened the inning with a infield single before scoring on a Kelly Fischer single to centerfield. Fischer then stole second and scored on a Hartwig base hit up the middle, making the score 5-2.
Memphis got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, but the 'Roos responded with three runs in fifth to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Curry did most of the damage for the team, as her two-run double to right centerfield scored Whiteside and Carli Slagle. Curry then made her way around the bases to score following a pair of Memphis errors.
Anna Sokolik picked up her first career victory after pitching 3.2 innings of six hit ball. The freshman struck out four and allowed three earned runs. Senior Samantha Hurst, meanwhile, picked up the save in 3.1 innings of relief where she allowed just one run on four hits with six Ks.
