
Kangaroos Fall To Fighting Sioux, 5-4

Memphis, Tenn. -- UMKC couldn't extend its seventh inning come back and dropped a close one to North Dakota, 5-4. The loss puts the Kangaroos at 5-11 on the season and the Fighting Sioux picked up their first win of the '09 campaign improving to 1-4. Leading the way with the sticks for the `Roos was Danielle Bennefeld, who scored two runs off of one hit and drove in one run.
UMKC scored one run in the second and third innings, but were only able to drive in two runs in the seventh. North Dakota struck in the first, third and fifth innings to seal the win. The Kangaroos were out-hit 10-6 over the course of seven innings.
On the mound for UMKC was Nicholle Ellis and Taya Upkes. Ellis threw the first four innings and allowed seven hits, five runs, two of which were earned and struck out three. Upkes wrapped up the last three innings and gave up three hits while striking out four.
Day two of the Memphis Tournament was cancelled due to weather but the second game between UMKC and North Dakota is scheduled to be made up tomorrow starting at 10:00 a.m. Memphis has been having some winter weather the past couple of days, including snow, ice and below freezing temperatures.
