UMKC Tops Creighton To Win Fifth Straight

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's tennis team ran its winning streak to five matches with a 7-0 victory over Creighton at the Woodside Racquet & Health Club on Friday morning. The Kangaroos remained undefeated in doubles on the year and they swept through all six singles matches to claim the victory.
The team's 5-1 start is the best for the program since the 1999-00 season, when the squad started 5-2. The five-match winning streak, meanwhile, is the longest for the 'Roos since the 1998-99 season when the team won seven straight.
The Bluejays secured the first doubles victory of the day when Michael Elson and Jose Guerra teamed up to defeat Erwin Quintanilla and Dennis Schwarz by the score of 8-5 at the No. 2 line. The Kangaroos, however, got wins at the one and three positions to take the point.
Serge Ristivojevic and Gustavo Guerin remained perfect this spring with an 8-6 victory over James McAvoy and Kyle Obermeier at the three line. Bret Berryman and Patrick Smith then improved to 5-0 this season when they held off Gabe Nagy and Brian Ward at the top spot by the score of 9-7.
In singles, UMKC got straight set victories at the two, three and five positions. Smith defeated Nagy, 7-5, 7-5, at the No. 2 position, Ristivojevic topped Obermeier, 6-3, 6-1, at the three line and Schwarz upended Lube, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5. Ristivojevic's and Schwarz's victories extended their current winning streaks to five straight matches.
The 'Roos also got three set wins from Berryman, Guerin and Quintanilla. Berryman rallied from being a set down (7-5) to defeat Guerra, 6-4, 7-6 (4) at the one line. Quintanilla won his fifth straight with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Elson at the six position and Guerin evened his record at 4-4 with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 win over McAvoy at the four line.
UMKC (5-1) will return to action on March 7 when it heads to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska.
