UMKC Hangs With No. 41 Arkansas In 5-2 Defeat

Fayetteville, Ark. -- The UMKC men's tennis team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-2 loss at No. 41 Arkansas on Wednesday afternoon in Fayetteville. In the defeat, sophomore Dennis Schwarz ran his winning streak to eight straight matches with his three-set victory at the No. 3 singles position.
The Razorbacks opened the day with three straight doubles victories to claim the first point of the match. Matt Hogan and Blake Strode started things off with an 8-3 victory over Serge Ristivojevic and Patrick Smith at the one line. Branden Joost and Jorge Villanueva then clinched the point with a 8-4 win over Nick Mader and Nick Patonai at the No. 3 position. At the two, UMKC's Erwin Quintanilla and Schwarz battled Colin Mascall and Tyler Tarnasky before dropping an 8-5 decision.
Once the match turned to singles, UA claimed victories at the one, two, five and six lines to clinch the win. Schwarz, a native of Munich, Germany, tallied UMKC's first point of the day with his three-set victory over Bradwin Williams at the No. 3 position by the scores of 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. The sophomore has not lost a match since March 8, and he improved to 8-3 on the season with the win.
The team's second victory came at the four line where Quintanilla downed Nick Spinazze in three sets. Spinazze opened the match with a 7-6 (4) victory in the first before Quintanilla claimed the second, 6-4. In the super tiebreaker, the UMKC sophomore came out on top by the score of 10-7.
UMKC (4-8) will return to action on Friday afternoon against Centenary. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.
