Kansas City, Mo. -- UMKC couldn't find its stride in the final game of its conference
series, falling 3-0 to IPFW on Sunday afternoon. Julie Hartung went
2-for-3 for the Kangaroos, but it wouldn't be enough.
IPFW scored the first runs of the contest in the top of the third courtesy of a two-out two-run shot from Rachel Staschuk.
UMKC starter Samantha Hurst tried to help her own cause, leading off the bottom of the third with a single to left, but was retired on a double play as Lauren Rodrigues hit a laser into the glove to the Mastodon shortstop, who made the routine throw to first.
The visitors added a run in the top of the fifth, with UMKC unable to answer in either the fifth or sixth.
Hartung hit a rocket to right in the top of the seventh, but a shift in the wind kept it inside the park for a double. She was able to advance to third as Carli Slagle grounded out, but the Kangaroos couldn't push the run across.
Hurst was charged with the loss for the Kangaroos. UMKC (6-23, 4-10 Summit) is slated to return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Missouri State. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 2 p.m.
