Men's Tennis Clinches Summit League Championship Berth With 4-0 Win Over IPFW

Galesburg, Ill. -- The UMKC men's tennis team clinched a spot in The Summit League Championship with a 4-0 victory over IPFW on Saturday morning at the Lakeside Racquet Club in Galesburg, Ill. The Kangaroos, who finish the regular season with a 6-8 overall record and a 4-2 mark in league play, claimed the match with wins at the top four singles positions.
With snowfall in Macomb forcing the match indoors, the two squads started the match with singles. The Kangaroos picked up their first win of the day when Patrick Smith downed Nate Jones by the scores of 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Sophomore Dennis Schwarz then followed with his 10th straight victory, a 6-4, 6-4 win over Carlos Gonzalez at the three. Schwarz finishes the regular season with a 10-3 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in league play.
Fellow sophomore Erwin Quintanilla put UMKC up 3-0 with his straight set victory at No. 3. Quintanilla claimed the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) before going on to the win with a 6-4 victory in the second.
At the top position, freshman Serge Ristivojevic clinched the win for the Kangaroos with his three-set victory over the Mastodons' Nabil Filho. The Kangaroo freshman opened the match with a 6-4 victory in the first set before Filho stayed alive with a 7-6 (5) win in the second. In the decider, Ristivojevic came away with the 6-2 win to seal the team victory.
UMKC will return to action on April 25 at the Summit League Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Kangaroos, who will be the No. 3 seed at the Championship, will face off against either Western Illinois or Oral Roberts in their opening match.
