Wichita, Kan. -- A brisk breeze and frigid temperatures greeted the Kangaroos on Friday as they opened play in the Shocker Invitational against Iowa State. UMKC wasn't able to warm up its bats, mustering one hit in a 7-0 loss to the Cyclones.
Iowa State struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second and three in the third, but UMKC was able to keep the Cyclones off the board in the fourth.
The Cyclones threatened to end the game early, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't push an eighth run across. Samantha Hurst came on in relief, striking out two to end the inning and strand three Cyclones on base.
The Kangaroos put a runner in scoring position in the sixth, but couldn't break the deadlock as Lauren Cross grounded out to third to end the inning.
Taya Upkes took the loss for the Kangaroos, falling to 1-3 on the year. Amie Ford pitched a complete game for Iowa State, walking five with no strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Kangaroos (1-7) are back in action tomorrow, facing fellow Summit League squad South Dakota State at 3 p.m. before taking on host Wichita State at 5:30. Both games will be broadcast live on www.umkckangaroos.com.
