Men's Tennis Comes Up Short At Air Force

Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The UMKC men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Air Force on Saturday morning at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Kangaroos narrowly lost the doubles point, before the Falcons claimed five-of-six singles matches to secure the victory.
In doubles, AFA's Mike Gies and Johnny Buckingham opened the day with an 8-4 victory over Nick Mader and Nick Patonai at the No. 3 position. The Kangaroos, however, evened things up when Erwin Quintanilla and Dennis Schwarz topped Austin Francis and Alex Beaussart, 8-6, at the two line to win their second consecutive match. The Falcons then won the deciding match at the No. 1 line in a tiebreaker to claim the point. AFA's Brett Rodgers and Taylor Soster defeated Patrick Smith and Serge Ristivojevic, 9-8 (3).
In singles, Air Force picked up straight set victories at one, three, four and five to claim the match. Rodgers topped Ristivojevic, 6-2, 6-4 at the one line, Soster defeated Quintanilla, 6-4, 6-1 at three, and Beaussart was victorious over Mader, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. The Falcons also got three set wins at the No. 2 and No. 6 lines. Francis topped Smith, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4 at two before Gies defeated Patonai, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 11-9 at No. 6.
UMKC got its lone singles victory from Schwarz at the four line. The Germany native won his third consecutive match, as he defeated Buckingham, 6-1, 7-5.
The Kangaroos (1-5) will close out its trip to Colorado on Sunday morning when they will face the Northern Colorado Bears beginning at 11 a.m.
