
Brumagin's 28 Points Leads UMKC To 70-62 Win Over IPFW

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's basketball team picked up its first Summit League victory of the season with a 70-62 win over IPFW on Saturday night at Municipal Auditorium. The Kangaroos used a 12-2 mid-second half run to build a 57-47 lead, and they never looked back in the eight point victory.
The Mastodons surged out to a 12-9 lead early in the contest, before UMKC used a 12-3 run to take a 21-15 lead. Senior Dane Brumagin and sophomore Spencer Johnson scored all 12 of the points during the Kangaroo spurt.
The Mastodons immediately evened the score with back-to-back three-pointers by Aaron Richie, before Brumagin connected on a triple to put the Kangaroos up 24-21 with 6:12 to go in the half. The lead changed twice in the final five minutes, before UMKC took a 33-27 lead into the break following a tip-in from Latreze Mushatt at the buzzer.
UMKC quickly pushed its lead to double digits at 37-27 early in the second half, before IPFW used a 11-3 run over a four minute stretch to climb to within a field goal at 40-38. The Mastodons continued pushing, and they managed to even the score at 45-45 with 10:26 to go in the game.
The Kangaroos responded with a 12-2 run to stretch its lead back to 10 (57-47) with 6:17 to play. James Humphrey opened the spurt with a lay-up before Brumagin knocked down four straight free throws to stretch the margin to 51-45. After a David Carson jumper cut the deficit to four (51-47), back-to-back buckets by Reggie Hamilton pushed the margin to eight and Brumagin followed with a fast break lay-up to push UMKC's advantage back to double digits.
UMKC then stretched the lead to a game-high 12 points (60-48) at the 4:53 mark. IPFW kept the game within its reach with a 10-4 run to close the margin to six at 64-58 with 31 seconds remaining, but the Kangaroos made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to run out 70-62 winners.
UMKC finished with a .390 (23-59) field goal percentage and a .286 (6-21) mark from long range. IPFW, meanwhile, shot .351 (20-57) from the field and .389 (7-18) from three-point land. The Mastodons also won the battle on the boards, 45-35.
Two Kangaroo players finished in double figures. Brumagin scored a game-high 28 points on an 8-of-18 night from the field. The forward made all nine of his attempts from the charity stripe, and also had three steals. Johnson tallied his second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Humphrey had a career-best five blocks.
The Mastodons also had two players finish the game in double digits. Carson led the team with 13 points and nine boards, while Jeremy Mixon had 10 points off the bench.
UMKC (4-6, 1-1) will now hit the road for three straight contests beginning with a Dec. 13 match-up at Loyola Chicago.
