Kansas City, Mo. -- Behind a perfect shooting night from Alysa Klein, UMKC rolled to a 80-48 win over Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. The Kangaroos controlled the first half, shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor while holding the Thunderbirds to a 25 percent clip.
UMKC controlled the tip, with Brittny Picconi finding Sierra Radke open on the wing for an easy trey with just 12 seconds gone.
The Kangaroos couldn't connect over the next 2:38, however, and Southern Utah took advantage with two buckets to grab a 4-3 lead.
Klein dropped in an easy layup off an assist by Marta Waalen at the 17:10 mark to spark an 18-1 UMKC run. Chazny Morris poured in seven points over the span, with Klein banking six.
With 9:08 left in the half, Kaila Goff hit a triple - the first Southern Utah bucket since the 18:09 mark - but UMKC shrugged off the effort with a 8-1 spurt to take a 29-9 lead with 5:23 left in the half.
The Kangaroos kept up the pace down the stretch, taking a 40-18 lead into the break as Myleka Emerson canned a trey with six seconds remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
UMKC continued strong out of the intermission with a 17-7 run over the first 7:17 to take a 57-25 lead. Marta Waalen led the Kangaroos with six points over the stretch on 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line.
Southern Utah finally found its shooting touch, but couldn't close the gap as UMKC ran out 80-48 winners.
Klein led all scorers with 20 points, hauling in seven of UMKC's 38 rebounds. Morris added 16 points in her return, with Kalei Nance rounding out the double-digit scorers for UMKC with 11, while adding seven boards.
Anne Westwood was the lone scorer in double figures for Southern Utah with 11 point to go along with her team-best nine rebounds.
