Springfield, Mo. -- Wednesday evening was more trick than treat as the UMKC men's soccer team closed out its non-conference slate with a 5-2 loss to Missouri State.
The hosts opened the scoring early, tallying in the sixth minute. Yanik Joseph crossed the ball to Kyle Windmueller, who headed past UMKC netminder from five yards out.
UMKC would nearly equalize in the 13th minute, but efforts from Brian Harris and Chris Markey were both blocked by the Bears defense.
The Bears doubled their lead in the 20th minute, as Tyson Striebel found net from the middle of the penalty area.
UMKC stepped up the pressure and would cut the lead in half in the 29th minute courtesy of a John Bayron Sosa free kick. Missouri State was whistled for a foul just outside the box and the freshman curled his effort into the net.
Missouri State struck again just before the half, as Ryan Hennessey nodded in a cross from Justin Alford.
Harris nearly cut the deficit back to one in the 52nd minute, but his effort was saved by the Missouri State netminder. A follow-on effort by Miguel Rodrigues sailed over the crossbar for a goal kick for the Bears.
