
Volleyball Closes Out Non-Conference Schedule With A 3-0 Loss At Butler

Indianapolis, Ind. - Playing its third match in as many days, the UMKC volleyball team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 3-0 loss at Butler on Sunday afternoon at the Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The Kangaross dropped the match by the scores of 22-30, 10-30 and 21-30 to fall to 5-21 on the season.
The Bulldogs jumped out to the early 10-4 lead to start the first game before the Kangaroos climbed to within three points at 11-8. Butler then built its advantage to six points at 18-12, but UMKC continued fighting to stay in the game. The team was able to get to within four points at 21-17 and 22-18 behind kills by Lauren Starks and Holly Schmidt, but the Bulldogs went on to claim the game, 30-22.
Butler opened the second game by getting out to a 14-1 lead before building its advantage to 20-4. The Bulldogs, which hit a match-high .419 (14-1-31), went on to easily win the game, 30-10.
After the break, Butler again used a strong start to take a 7-0 lead, but this time UMKC would fight back. The Kangaroos used kills by Jamie Hagerman and Sarah Johnson to get to within two points at 10-8, but the Bulldogs then reeled off seven straight points to take an 18-10 lead. Butler continued applying the pressure, as it went on to earn the three-game sweep via the 30-21 win.
Johnson paced the team with 10 kills, while Hagerman added six in the defeat. Junior Danni Sperry led the squad with 10 assists, while sophomore Kelly Gettinger had a team-best 14 digs.
UMKC (5-21) will return to action on Friday night at Oral Roberts.
