Leslie Howard enters her first season with the UMKC women’s basketball team as a student manager. Howard joined the program after serving as an assistant coach at Fayetteville High School girls basketball team in Fayetteville, Ark., during the 2007-08 season.
Before joining the coaching ranks, Howard was a member of the Arkansas women’s basketball team, where she led her team to an 18-13 overall record during the 2006-07 season. She appeared in 30 games and earned the starting nod in eight contests, where she averaged 12.7 minutes a game.
In Howard's first season with the Lady Razorbacks, she helped the team to the best start in SEC play in school history. Peaking with an outstanding 24-point effort in the upset of No. 24 Florida, she entered February 2006 as a marked woman. In spite of the best efforts of league opponents, the shooting guard finished the season as Arkansas’ top scorer in league games with 11.2 average.
Howard played in 19 games, starting 10 as a midterm junior for the Lady Razorbacks, averaging 10.4 points per game and 1.5 rebounds. She was a .414 percent shooter from the three-point range and averaged 2.6 makes per game. After graduating with her undergraduate degree in psychology in 2007, Howard completed the first year of her master’s at Arkansas.
Before becoming a Razorback, Howard played a season and a half at Colorado. As a sophomore, she started a pair of games in the 2004-05 season before leaving the team and subsequently transferring to Arkansas. The guard averaged 2.4 points per game as a freshman, while shooting 48 percent from three-point range.
As a prep, Howard finished her high school basketball career as Salem’s all-time leading scorer with 2,152 points. As a senior, she was named first-team all-state by the Missouri Sportswriters Association to go along with all-region honors. She also participated in the state all-star game. A four-time all-conference player, Howard was the co-player of the year for the South Central Association as a junior and senior. She was also a four-time all-conference track athlete, while also lettering in softball and volleyball.
Howard is originally from Salem, Mo., and is currently seeking her master’s in liberal studies from UMKC.
