Joan Rickert moved to the development side of the athletic department after serving as Kangaroos interim head volleyball coach during the 2010 season. Rickert was appointed as the Development Specialist for the athletics department in the Summer of 2011 and will be responsible for all UMKC special events and aide the Associate Director for Development in other duties in conjunction with new and existing donors.
On Sep. 16, 2010, Rickert was named the Interim Head Coach for the UMKC volleyball program in her fourth year with the 'Roos after serving as the associate head coach. During her first three years at UMKC, Rickert served as an assistant coach.
During the 2009 season, Rickert helped lead the Kangaroos to a 15-16 overall
record. The 15 victories were the third most in school history, while the
10 league wins tied for the most all-time. Additionally, Rickert coached
Christiana McQuin and Jamie Hagerman to the all-Summit League Second team and Hagerman
to The Summit League all-Tournament Team.
Prior to joining the Kangaroo staff, Rickert served as the full-time women's
head coach at Missouri Valley College. Rickert took over the 2006
Missouri Valley College men's volleyball program on an interim basis, three
days before their first game. She led the squad to a 20-9 record and a third
place national finish before becoming only the second woman in the U.S. to earn
Conference Coach of the Year honors as a female coach in a men's sport.
Rickert has a total of 24 years of coaching experience that ranges from seventh
grade to the collegiate level, including club teams in the Columbus and Omaha
areas. Prior to joining Missouri Valley College, Rickert spent the last eight
years at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont , Neb. -six of those years as head
coach, where she compiled a 117-92 record. Rickert has coached four Academic
all-American teams and seven NAIA Academic all-Americans.
Originally from Columbus, Neb., Rickert grew up playing volleyball. She spent
her collegiate volleyball career playing at Platte Technical Community College in
Columbus, Neb., where she was part of an 11th ranked team in the nation.
Rickert then attended Wayne State College where she earned a bachelor's of
science degree in physical education and history in 1980. She then went on to
earn her master's degree in supervision and administration from the University
of Nebraska at Omaha. Rickert also holds endorsements for principal,
physical education, coaching, large scale assessment, and classroom assessment.
Rickert and her husband, Mark, have two children - Dustin and Darcy.
