Shelby Brown was named the Head Athletic Trainer in June 2011. She joined the UMKC staff in Sept. 2009, as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. She handles women's soccer and supervises golf and tennis, while overseeing the whole department. Prior to coming to UMKC, Brown served as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Furman University from 2007-09.
While at Furman, Brown worked with the volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s cross country/track & field programs, while assisting with home, conference and NCAA events. She also aided the Furman University Sports Medicine Center in consultations, evaluations and treatments to the general student population, staff, faculty and Greenville community.
Prior to working at Furman, Brown was the Assistant Athletic Trainer at South Carolina State University from March 2006 to July 2007. She oversaw the volleyball, women’s basketball and softball programs in addition to assisting and evaluating all student-athletes. Brown began working in sports medicine at the University of South Carolina, where she was a graduate assistant for the Gamecock men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, intramural and club sports, and a physician’s extender in the USC Sports Medicine Orthopedic Clinic servicing USC and SCSU student-athletes, as well as the Columbia community .
Brown holds two associate’s degrees, one in physical therapy from Penn Valley Community College and another is a liberal arts degree from Johnson County Community College. She also earned dual bachelor’s degrees in athletic training and kinesiology from Kansas State in December 2003 before receiving her master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic training from South Carolina in May 2006.
Brown is a board certified athletic trainer, licensed Missouri athletic trainer, a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is certified as a CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer through the American Heart Association.
