R.K. Paxton joined the UMKC staff as the sports information graduate assistant in August of 2013. His responsibilities include directing communications for softball and women's soccer, while assisting on men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and cross country.
Paxton plays a significant role in shaping and maintaining the presence of UMKC Athletics on various social media mediums, directing his respective sport-specific accounts in-season, while also creating promotional graphics to be used by assorted programs throughout the year. Paxton's work in graphic design also encompasses print items ranging from media guide covers, posters, camp flyers, et al.
In addition to communications-related contributions, Paxton also serves as an intern in the office of Student-Athlete Support Services, assisting in the mentorship of student-athletes with a focus on cultivating the academic and personal development of student-athletes.
A Northeastern State graduate, Paxton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in media studies and political science. Prior to arriving at UMKC, Paxton spent two years with the Tahlequah (Okla.) Daily Press as the associate digital editor. In 2011, he was named the Associated Press/ONE Newcomer of the Year.
During the 2014 season, Paxton served as the media relations intern for the American League champion Kansas City Royals, as well as a real-time consultant for Major League Baseball. His responsibilities included the preparation of pregame and post-game notes for each Royals home game, as well as working as a liaison between the clubhouse, the broadcast level, and the writer's press box.
The Springdale, Ark., native is pursuing a master's degree in higher education administration with a focus on sports administration.
