Mark Ramarola scored his first career goal in the 90th minute to salvage a point on the road

DALLAS, Texas - When third-ranked SMU found the back of the net in the 86th minute, many may have thought the game was over. They may have thought, "Hey, the Roos gave it a heck of an effort." They may have thought it was just the way the ball rolled tonight. They may have thought wrong. Kansas City Men's Soccer proved its tenacity, as it has time and time again over the past three seasons, scoring the equalizing goal from the foot of Mark Ramarola in the 90th minute and stealing a top five road result, 1-1.

After settling into the match, the Roos were the aggressors for the majority of the first 45 minutes. They earned the first corner kick of the match in the ninth minute, resulting in a skidding Miguel Fernandez shot that was blocked away. Ramarola placed his first shot on goal in the 20th minute, dropping a pair of defenders and testing SMU's keeper, Jonathan Evans, with the Roos' first shot on goal. Raphael Kistmann earned a corner kick just minutes later, using a one-on-one opportunity to attack up the right side and sending a shot towards goal that was pushed away by Evans' fingertips. Brandon Kincaid was solid when needed, making a strong-armed block on a shot destined for goal in the 31st.

Ultimately, neither team could find the go-ahead goal, a trend that would continue well into the second half. However, the trend of the game seemed to switch. SMU applied the pressure, attempting four shots and forcing Kincaid into another save in the first 20 minutes. Then Kansas City found its stride once again, attempting four shots in the span of four minutes, including a runner by Bryce Outman that could have spelled danger had Evans not fallen on top of it.

The teams traded punches (metaphorically, although the tempers did rise) throughout the next 15 minutes before the Mustangs struck first. Kansas City turned the ball over in the SMU final third, putting the Roos on their heels and leading to a goal by Stephan Soghomonian that was all but the game-winner.

The only reason it was not the game-winner was because Kansas City continued battling. As the final minute of game time began ticking off the clock, Outman was given room up the right side and dribbled into the edge of the attacking third, sending a pass to a surrounded Fernandez and drawing the attention of four defenders. Fernandez smartly played the ball back out to Outman, who sent a one-time ball directly to Ramarola, who was left with space in the middle of the box. Ramarola used a left-footed volley to weave the ball directly into the lower-right corner, grabbing a result where a loss seemed all but destined.

Ramarola's goal was the first of his Kansas City career, adding on to a pair of assists to give him four total points through four games played. Outman's assist was his first of the year after the Dallas native led the Roos with five assists last season.

Kansas City has now tallied five results against teams ranked in the top 10 across the Ryan Pore era, including draws against SMU in each of the past two seasons. It is the highest-ranked result by the Roos since defeating No. 3 Denver, 1-0, on Oct. 12, 2024.

The Roos remain on the road for another test on Monday, traveling to Drake for a meeting with the Bulldogs.
