Kansas City Earns a Point to Kick Off the Conference Season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Women's Soccer Team opened Summit League play with a 1-1 draw against Oral Roberts Thursday evening at Durwood Stadium.

The Roos earned a point against ORU, which was ranked No. 2 in this week's United Soccer Coaches West Region poll and won the Summit League regular-season title last season.

Kansas City came out attacking early, with Ashley Koch putting a shot just wide in the fourth minute. Two minutes later, the Roos broke through as Olivia Orosco scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Mia Urosevich and Kaitlyn Edwards each recorded their first assists of the season on the play, with the assist marking the first of Urosevich's collegiate career.

Oral Roberts answered in the 18th minute when Brianna Castleberry floated a shot to the back post and found the back of the net, leveling the match at 1-1. ORU held a 4-2 advantage in shots heading into halftime.

The second half featured an entertaining back-and-forth battle, with the two teams combining for 17 shots. The Roos recorded four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the half, nearly retaking the lead when a Rose Proteau shot struck the post off a corner kick. The opportunity came after an Orosco shot was tipped over the crossbar, forcing the corner.

Anika Patton kept the Roos level throughout the second half, making six saves in the final 45 minutes to finish with nine saves on the night. Neither team could find a late winner as Kansas City opened Summit League play with a 1-1 draw.
