Platt’s Late Goal Lifts Roos Past St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Kansas City Roos Women's Soccer Team earned all three points on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating St. Thomas 1-0 behind a late goal from Olivia Platt.
"We did not play well today as a whole, but I'm really proud of us for finding a way to win, especially on the road," said Head Coach Jess Smith. "Conference is about getting results, so this is a great start for us, but now we turn our focus to Omaha. We have to get better at mentally & physically executing our game plan and being more consistent."
Kansas City (2-6-2, 1-0-1 SL) picked up its first Summit League road victory of the season and now has four points through its opening two conference matches.
The opening 45 minutes featured a back-and-forth battle, with the two teams combining for 13 shots. Each team recorded just one shot on target in the opening half as the match remained scoreless heading into the break. St. Thomas held a 9-4 advantage in shots at halftime.
The Roos came out of the break as the more dangerous side, immediately putting pressure on the Thommies. Kansas City forced a save from the St. Thomas goalkeeper in the 47th minute before a team save kept the match scoreless just one minute later.
Kansas City continued to apply pressure, registering eight more shots in the second half. In the 87th minute, Brooklyn Lupinacci fired a shot toward goal that was palmed away and out for a Kansas City corner.
The Roos would make the ensuing corner count.
In the 88th minute, Kaitlyn Edwards sent a corner into the box that was deflected off the head of Mia Ozanne and fell to Olivia Platt at the back post. The fifth-year senior calmly finished the chance to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead with just two minutes remaining.
The goal marked Platt's second of the season and her third goal contribution of the campaign.
Kansas City held on through the final minutes to secure the 1-0 victory and return home with all three points. The Roos have now earned four of a possible six points through the first two matches of Summit League play.
NOTES
Kansas City remains on the road next Saturday, Oct. 3, traveling to Nebraska to take on Omaha. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
