Kansas City picked up a statement win on its home turf, running rampant on the Spartans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - One vote. That's all Kansas City Men's Soccer received in the Sep. 8 United Soccer Coaches Top-25 rankings. Enough to earn the (RV) in front of its name, sure, but not what might have been expected after a road result over the third-ranked team and a road win while playing with 10 men for most of the second half. This is not to say it was bulletin board material, but one can imagine it gave the Roos some extra fire heading into Friday night's game against No. 10 Michigan State.

Well, the Roos may have caught some eyes with this one.

Kansas City struck early and it struck often, handling the Spartans en route to a 3-1 victory. The Roos have now won two straight games when hosting a top-10 opponent on the turf at Durwood Soccer Stadium, the previous occurrence coming on Oct. 12, 2024, a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Denver.

Mariano Beunza made his mark on the game in the early going, scoring the opening goal in the ninth minute. He laid a ball off to Brevyn Cole on the right side, then immediately began his run. Cole's first crossing attempt was cycled back out to him, so he gave it another go. The second cross from Cole was pure; the in-swinging ball found a leaping Beunza who headed the ball home and gave Kansas City an early advantage.

The Roos continued to win dangerous opportunities, and it paid off in the 38th minute in the form of a true team goal. The Kansas City back line extended Michigan State, possessing the ball on the edge of its own 18-yard box. Bryson Gosch took the chance to play the ball forward, finding Brice Miller Jr. in the midfield. Miller quickly played the ball to Mathias Baucher, who took a touch and found a streaking Makhi Francis. The Roos pushed numbers forward in front of Francis, who eventually laid the ball off to Cole with space up the right side. Cole sent a perfect cross to Gabriele Galluccio, who slotted the ball into the side netting for his first goal of the season and doubled KC's advantage.

When all was said and done it was a dominant half for the Roos, entering the break with a 2-0 lead and a 9-4 advantage in the shots category.

The second half began to even itself out and it was the Spartans who created the more dangerous opportunities. It culminated in a 55th-minute goal, putting Michigan State right back on the Roos' heels.

Bryce Outman was the man to put the game to rest in the 85th minute, making a perfectly timed run alongside Mark Ramarola and Bryson Gosch for the game-sealing goal, his first of the year.

Kansas City moves to 4-1-1 on the season following the win and shot up to No. 7 in the RPI rankings, per RPI Update. It is the sixth win against a top-10 team in program history, joining the 1996, 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2024 Roos as the only teams to do so.

The Roos are back in action with a road test on Wednesday evening, traveling to No. 19 Missouri State for a meeting with their in-state rivals. It will be the fifth time in the past four seasons that the Roos and Bears go head-to-head, and the 34th meeting in the all-time series.
