ST. PAUL, Minn. - The No. 3 Kansas City Men's Soccer team picked up a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over St. Thomas Saturday afternoon, earning its second straight Summit League win.
Kansas City (7-1-2, 2-0-0 SL) battled through a frustrating opening 45 minutes as the Tommies sat back defensively and closed down passing lanes through the middle, forcing the Roos to work the ball around the outside.
In the 15th minute, Miguel Fernandez was brought down inside the box, prompting the Roos to appeal for a penalty. After a VAR review, the penalty was awarded, and Mariano Beunza stepped up and calmly buried his attempt into the upper-right corner for his fifth goal of the season, giving Kansas City a 1-0 lead.
The Roos carried the advantage into halftime, holding a narrow 3-2 edge in shots.
The second half told a different story, with St. Thomas pushing forward in search of an equalizer while Kansas City battled to protect its lead on the road. The Roos' defense held firm, limiting the Tommies to just one shot on goal through the first 88 minutes.
St. Thomas finally tested Brandon Kincaid in the 89th minute after a free kick bounced around inside the box, but Kincaid came up with the save to preserve the shutout and secure the 1-0 victory for Kansas City.
NOTES
Kansas City is back in action when they host Head Coach Ryan Pore's alma mater, Tulsa, at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, October 7th, at 6 PM.
