Kansas City conceded an early goal but played the final 87 minutes to an even draw
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Kansas City Women's Soccer (4-4) conceded an early goal to Missouri (3-3-1) this evening, but refused to lay down from there, battling in a 1-0 loss. The Roos' streak of six-straight games with a goal comes to a close as KC was held to three shots, two of which were on goal in the game.
Missouri struck quickly, scoring on their first corner kick of the day. The Tigers' Emily Derucki sent a ball into the box and it created chaos, bouncing off of Mia Yang and towards goal. KC's Emilia Zolesio Fernandez Blanco attempted to clear the ball away, but it was too little, too late and the ball found the netting. The Roos struggled to establish an offensive flow in the first half, credited for just one shot when Olivia Platt attempted to find Ashley Koch on a through pass that was just a hair too strong.
The Roos came out with gusto in the second half, creating a pair of early chances. In the 51st minute, Ashley Koch gained a head of steam in the counter attack and found room to let a shot fly, but her attempt was high of the mark. Just 90 seconds later, nearly the identical situation came about. This time, Koch took an extra touch and it was smothered by MU's Kate Phillips.
Kansas City's defense stood strong throughout the game with multiple second half saves from Audrey Brown and other blocked shots and team saves by the Roos' back line. The Roos continued searching for the equalizer to the very end, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Roos remain on the road next Sunday, taking on Southeast Missouri State for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
