Ashley Koch’s goal in the 24th minute wasn’t enough to overcome a late Golden Eagles surge
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Summit League opener didn't go as well as the Roos hoped it would as visiting Oral Roberts (7-3-1) mounted a two-goal comeback to steal three points in a 2-1 decision over the Roos at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening. The Roos and Golden Eagles exchanged goals in the first half before ORU pressed Kansas City on all sides and saw a go-ahead own-goal put them in front for good.Â
In the first few minutes of the match, Audrey Brown was called on to step up in goal, saving the Golden Eagles first two shots, the latter of which was made on a diving effort by the redshirt junior goalkeeper. Brown finished with three saves for the game, giving her 25 total one game into league action. The game remained in a lull for the next 20 minutes with both teams feeling each other out before capitalizing on opportunities.Â
The Roos breakthrough came on a free kick after Ashley Koch drew a foul on ORU's Alaina Trevino, leading to Kansas City's first real chance of the evening. Ella Reyling placed a beautiful ball past the Golden Eagles defense and into the vicinity of Koch. The junior forward took advantage, striking the one-hopper pass into the back left corner of the net to put the Roos up 1-0 in the 24th minute. Koch notched her sixth goal of the season and first since Kansas City's 4-3 win over SEMO.Â
A pivotal turning point came when Rose Proteau was tagged with a red card in the 42nd minute which put Kansas City down a player for the majority of the match. Oral Roberts seized the opportunity, scoring an equalizer right before the break off a corner kick chance as sophomore midfielder Precious Edosa knocked in a header from the back post to make the contest even at 1-1 heading into half.Â
In the 65th minute, the Roos were snake-bitten by a costly own-goal that put ORU in front 2-1. The Roos caught a break of their own when ORU's Kiran Singh was given a red card at the 80th minute, putting both teams down to 10 players for the last 10 minutes of the game. Kansas City tried to work their way towards an equalizing score but couldn't get enough shots on goal in the later stages of the second half.
Kansas City was out-shot by the Golden Eagles 12-5 while also dropping the corner kicks category 5-1 for the game. Also of note, five cards were given out, two reds and three yellows with four cards dished out to Oral Roberts and just one to Kansas City. Four different Roos registered shots, including Delfina Zolesio with two, Reyling and Lucia Lopez Fernandez at one each and Koch scoring on her lone shot attempt.Â
Summit League action continues for Kansas City as the Roos travel to Denver, Colo. to take on the Pios at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
