Roos Season Opener Thwarted by Billikens

Brown, Patton combine for eight saves in goal
KANSAS CITY, MO. - Kansas City Women's Soccer (0-1) opened up the 2025 campaign falling to Saint Louis (1-0), 4-0 at Durwood Soccer Stadium Thursday evening. The Billikens got in front of the Roos early as Lucie Schwartz scored an opening minute goal off the game's first corner kick. The Roos' first shot came just a few minutes later with Emery Ruliffson heading the ball high over the crossbar from the KC corner kick opportunity.Â
Later in the 31st minute, the Billikens scored a second goal thanks to another corner kick. This time, Izzy Luebbert looped in a crosser that was tapped by Hope Kim and eventually put into the back of the net by Emily Fox. Despite the pair of goals allowed, Kansas City goalkeeper Audrey Brown put together a strong half defending the net as the junior turned back several Billken shots on goal in the first half.Â
In the second half, Brown continued her solid effort in goal, notching two more saves to end the contest with four. Fellow Roos keeper Anika Patton got a chance to earn her stripes in the second half as the freshman subbed in for Brown and matched her with four saves of her own. In the 61st minute, Kaitlyn Edwards launched the ball at the goal but the chance was stopped by Saint Louis goalkeeper Nimu Karani.Â
Saint Louis put the Roos away with goals in the 58th and 83rd minute respectively. The Billikens continued to cash in on their corner kick opportunities as Rylee Howard netted the ball with a header from the back post to make it 3-0. Luebbert registered three assists on the Billikens four goals with the final Saint Louis score coming off the foot of Audrey Smith.Â
Madelyn Muhr and Kinsley Smith led the Roos in minutes played, each recording 80-plus minutes as Muhr led the squad with 84 and Smith with 81 for the game. Up next for Kansas City is a home tilt against Creighton at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
