Olivia Platt scored Kansas City’s first goal of the season off a penalty kick in the 85th minute
KANSAS CITY, MO. - Kansas City Women's Soccer (0-2) battled for 90 minutes but came up just short, falling 2-1 against Creighton (1-1) at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening. The match started off as a tightly contested defensive duel with both sides feeling each other out for the majority of the first half.Â
The Roos' lone shot of the half came off a free kick opportunity that saw Delfina Zolesio head the ball toward the lower right corner of the net. Later in the first half, Audrey Brown batted away an out of the box left footed boot by Creighton's Mallory Connealy to keep the score at 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.Â
In the 69th minute, Brynn Gardner set up a shot from just outside the box which pierced through the top left corner of the net to break the tie and give the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage. A few minutes later, Kaitlyn Edwards nearly tied the contest with a free kick shot that was just poked out of the goal by Bluejay keeper Alyssa Zalac.Â
With time dwindling down, Kansas City got its moment to shine thanks to a foul by Creighton's Clara Kulick on Olivia Platt in the box which sent the senior midfielder up for a penalty kick. Platt struck the ball towards the far left corner of the net just past the outstretched arms of Zalac to net the equalizing score. It was a goal of firsts in more ways than one as not only was it the Roos' first goal of the 2025 season but the penalty kick strike was also Platt's first goal of her career. Â
Following Platt's game-tying goal, Creighton struck back with an apparent goal in the 89th minute that was later reviewed on VAR and called back due to a foul on the play. A few moments later, a yellow card was tacked on Rose Proteau which sent Creighton' s Ariana Mondiri up for a penalty kick, booted into the back of the net to elevate the Bluejays into the 2-1 lead.Â
Kansas City had four shots in the contest, three of which were on goal. The Roos also notched four corner kicks and three saves for the game. Following two home matches to start the season, the Roos hit the road for the first time in 2025 as they travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
